Agriculture and fisheries account for 10% of the Philippine GDP. Its impact on the bottom line however is significant. It employs 30% of the labor force and around 70% of Filipinos live in rural areas, 2/3 of them depend on agriculture for livelihood.
The Committee recognizes the importance of the sector to local economic development. And as part of its advocacy, the Committee proactively works with the government to push for policy reforms that could enhance the productivity and competitiveness of the industry and in the process, improve the lives of farmers, fisherfolks, and agribusiness stakeholders, and promote exports.
The Committee is composed of six (7) subsector champions namely, Fishery, Grains, Poultry, Livestock, Dairy, Fruits and Vegetables, and Coconut.
